Firmware Update

Purpose

These instructions provide the procedures for updating the firmware version of your tool using the OBD Tool Updater.

Step 1 - Open the App on your PC.

Download the OBD Tool Updater for Windows or for Mac.

After finishing the download, you may access the app either on your desktop or by searching for 'OBD Tool Updater' on your PC.

Double-click on the application to open. 

The software will initially be displayed as 'Disconnected.'

Also, If using a USB charging cable, and not a USB data cable, you'll get the 'Disconnected' message.

1.Charging cables: Can only charge devices, but cannot transfer data. These are commonly called “Charge-only” cables.

2.Data cables: Does both; charges your devices and transfers data.

After installing the Updater app

Connect your tool to your computer using a USB data cable that fits your tool (it may be a USB-C depending on the tool). Wait a few seconds for the software to detect it.

The tool status will now appear as 'Connected.' It will also display the Firmware, Bootloader, and Database that the tool is currently at.

If the tool is connected to the computer but the app shows a 'Disconnected' status, perform the following:

Please make sure that the USB data cable is connected to the computer and that your tool are properly seated.

Try switching to a different USB port on your computer.

Try another USB cable.

Note: The USB port to connect your device to your computer is at the bottom of the device.

Step 1.5 - Troubleshooting

Possible Issue: Tool is connected to computer, but app shows "Disconnected" status.
  • Please make sure that the USB cable is connected to the computer and your tool are properly seated.
  • Try switching to a different USB port.
  • Try another USB cable.
Possible Issue: Your tool is connected but do not see "Update my tool now" button. That means your tool is up to date and there are no new updates for your tool.

Possible Issue: You're seeing the below issue on your Mac.

If you are on an apple device and get this issue:

  • Instead of 'double clicking' on the app, please 'right click' and select Open and the app should open correctly.

Step 2 - Click on 'Update my Tool now.'

Wait a few more seconds for the software to check for updates. If updates are available for your device, it will provide the option 'Update my tool now'. Select this option to begin the update process. This process may take some time. When your update is stuck at 1% (or 5%) and not progressing, perform the following:

  • Uninstall the updater app from your computer.
  • Reboot your computer.
  • Disable any Antivirus.
  • Reinstall the updater.
  • Attempt the update again by following the steps in this guide.

If you have tried the above procedures but the issue remains unresolved, follow the instructions below:

  • Swap out the USB cable with a new one.
  • Switch USB ports.
  • Switch to a different computer.
  • Try updating again.


If your tool is connected but you do not see an 'Update my tool now' button as shown in the image, that means your tool is already up to date to the latest version and there are no new updates for your tool.

Step 2.5 - Troubleshooting

Possible Issue: If your update is stuck at 1% (or 5%) and not progressing.

Your updater may be out of date.

  • Please install the latest updater for your tool
  • Download the updater app.
  • Click to install, when seeing the option to "Modify, Replace, or Repair".
  • Click Repair
  • Then follow the steps in this guide again.

Step 3 - Wait for the Update to Finish.

While your device is updating, please make sure to keep it connected. 

The update will be divided into individual steps such as bootloader, firmware, and database. This process may take up to 25 minutes. Please wait for all steps to complete. 

If an error occurred during the update, the software will display the last progress percentage and the message 'Update Error'. Please disconnect and reconnect the tool to attempt the upgrade process again.

Step 4 - Disconnect your tool when the update is complete.


When the update finishes successfully, the software will display the message 'Update Complete'. You may now exit and disconnect your tool.
