BLCKTEC 420: Erasing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

Purpose

To guide you on how to erase your DTCs while using the BLCKTEC 420.

Erasing DTCs

When the scan device ERASE function is used to erase the DTCs from the vehicle’s onboard computer, Freeze Frame data, and the manufacturer-specific enhanced data are also erased. The Permanent DTCs are not erased by the ERASE function.

Make sure that if you plan to take the vehicle to a Service Center for repair, do not erase the codes from the vehicle's computer. If the codes are erased, then valuable information that might help your service technician to troubleshoot the problem will also be erased.

When DTCs are erased, the I/M Readiness Monitor Status program resets the status of all Monitors to a no-run condition. To properly set all Monitors to a Done status, an OBD2 Drive Cycle must be performed.

Step 1 - Connect the Diagnostic Tool to the vehicle’s DLC, and turn the ignition 'ON', but do not start the engine.

If the Diagnostic Tool is already connected and linked to the vehicle’s computer, proceed directly to step 3. If not, continue to step 2.

Step 2 - Perform the Code Retrieval procedure 'RETRIEVING OBD2 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES.'

After scanning your vehicle and retrieving a list of DTC codes, to erase the DTCs, wait until the codes are displayed for your desired module.

Step 3 -Press and release ERASE button.

After viewing your codes, select the ERASE button.

A confirmation message will show.

If you are sure you want to proceed, select yes to continue, then press MENU/ENTER ↵.

If you do not want to proceed, select No, then press MENU/ENTER ↵ to cancel the erase procedure.

Step 4 - A 'One moment please' message will display while the erase function is in progress.

If you chose to erase DTCs, a 'One moment please' message will display while the erase function is in progress.

If the erase was successful, a confirmation message will show. The Diagnostic Tool automatically relinks to the vehicle’s computer after 3 seconds.

If the erase was not successful, an advisory message will display indicating that the erase request was sent to the vehicle’s computer. After 3 seconds, the Diagnostic Tool will automatically relink to the vehicle’s computer.
